Personal Development Basics
What seems like a lifetime ago, back in my late Teens, I got involved with Amway.
OK, some of you may laugh, some of you have never heard of Amway. Back in the 80’s it was being pushed really hard as a Home Business Opportunity that could make you wealthy overnight simply by recruiting others into the business.
Well, there was more to it than that, but that is how I saw it. And needless to say, it didn’t work for me and many others.
But it did teach me a lot about attitude to work and making money.
I realized that if I wanted to be wealthy, I would have to change the way I thought and acted, and learn from those who had gone before me.
In those days I read a lot of motivational books, such as “The Greatest Salesman in the World” by Og Mandino, and “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. Classic books that have stood the test of time (Napoleon Hill wrote his book in the 1930’s).
The lessons they teach are as applicable today as they were back in the last Century.
I think I’m right in saying that most people come into the world of Online Business wanting to make money, wanting to get rich, wanting to make it big. They have a motivation of sorts.
And we all need motivation. In fact, if we are in business we either motivate ourselves and get results, or we are motivated in a negative way by pressure from all sides.
But let me ask you something.
If you’re just getting started in building a business for yourself and your future, would you rather have Motivation or Education?
When I first got started trying to make money on the internet, I was motivated by all sorts of things: growing old (I’d just passed 40), lack of money, sense of time passing me by, those sorts of things.
So I was keen to get started. I wanted that “Laptop Lifestyle”, the recurring incomes, the money to travel and enjoy life.
There was only one problem.
I didn’t know how to get there. I didn’t know how to build a business online, I didn’t know anything about Websites, or Marketing, or Sales Copy, or Affiliates. The list goes on.
I had to get educated.
So I began a very steep learning curve, and I’m still on it today. In fact, when I stop learning, I’ll start going backwards.
I had to make a commitment to myself that I was going to do whatever it took to become good at building Websites and Marketing on the Internet.
A commitment to learn, to study, to grow, to overcome, to break through barriers, to do stuff I didn’t like to do.
I recently watched a selfie-video Alex Jeffreys made while on holiday in Thailand. Here is a guy who’s made Millions, and helped others to do the same. He is successful, confident in himself and motivated.
He’s also someone who’s committed to his self-development.
He admitted how uncomfortable he was at first, walking round a Hotel lobby recording himself on his iphone. He recognized this as a barrier, he addressed it and pushed through. He overcame a fear.
I’d like to challenge you to become a student. Identify what you need to learn and what you need to change in order to get where you want to go.
Because believe me, Millionaires think differently, act differently, not because they have the money, but the other way around. They have the money because they’ve learned, grown, overcome.
So I’d take the Education Train any day, over the Motivation Motorway.
I’d love to know what you think.
